The Buckthorn tree, whose Latin name is 'Rhamnus frangula', is from the buckthorn family. It is a perennial herb that sheds its leaves in winter. It got this name because Buckthornr was made from its timber. It is also known as Male Akdiken.
It grows in Europe, the Northwest, Asia, and North America. In our country, it is found in North and Central Anatolia. A subspecies of Buckthorn tree that grows only in Turkey, R.f. It grows in Pontica, Trabzon, Rize and Artvin forests.
It plays a major role in rebuilding and greening forests devastated by forest fires. In May and June, the Buckthorn tree blooms in bunches of tiny white flowers. This tree is a great food source for bees and butterflies. The plum fruit is red in color. It turns purple and black when mature.
Buckthorn bark is collected and dried in season. It can be consumed after at least one year of drying. Consumption before this is not recommended. Tea is made from dried Buckthorn bark. In addition, gunpowder and charcoal are produced from its timber.
