Myrtle plant, whose Latin name is 'Myrtus communis', is from the heather family. Its homeland is the Northern hemisphere. There are many species that grow in cool and mountainous regions of the world. It grows wild in the heath and forest areas of the Mediterranean, Aegean and Black Sea regions in our country. It is a perennial herb that never sheds its leaves in winter.
In some regions, it is also known as Murt, Elduran, Zazak, Sakızağacı, Grafted Mersin, Tea Grape. Its greenish-brown leaves are turned inside out and leathery. It is immediately distinguished from the leaves of other trees by its sharp, cooling scent. In May, dazzling white flowers bloom. The smell of the flowers is as wonderful as they look. It gives fruit with a misty blue color and a sour taste.
In some regions, myrtle leaves are used as a spice. With its sharp and distinctive aroma, it can easily display its taste in almost all kinds of meat dishes, salads and soups. Its fruits are used in making compotes, jams and various desserts.
